Growing Up on the Edge of World stands out among other novels among its genre. Though, the interesting thing is it doesn't fit in any genre per say. To be honest, when I first saw it, I didn't think it was going to be as good as it was.The storyline and characters are superb and is 200% in the class of debut novels.
It's basically the first person account of a boy growing up in a small town. His world is shaken by his formerly imprisoned brother's appearance at home. When he stumbles upon a bag of suspicious contents, he hides it, thinking it's something his brother is involved in.
Callaway does a superb job of mixing the mystery in with comedic and believable everyday life scenes. The characters are some of the best ever, including the lead and his palindrome-speaking brother.
The end is shocking and original. I never saw this one coming. I could go on and on about how good it is, but I will just have to leave the rest of the story up to you. It reminded me of a classic novel, but with an original Phil Callaway twist to it. Excellent work.
