James Scott Bell must have read our review of The Whole Truth before we even put it out there. He actually figured out how to write a story that doesn't have the author as one of the main characters!
Deceived is one of the most different and creative story lines anyone has ever come up with. It's about a Liz and her husband Artie, who stumble upon two saddlebags full of diamonds in a canyon while walking there. They fight over whether to keep them or not, and the argument ends with Liz pushing Artie over a cliff.
From there, she takes the diamonds and begins to weave a dangerous web that includes her sister-in-law, one of her husband's friends, and several other innocent bystanders.
Liz is a very believable character who has many flaws. The other characters are good as well.
The plot is well written with a spectacular end. Everything about this book meets our two standards: original and good in a wonderful way.
This is my bid for the book of the year so far.
5 stars
