When a couple having marriage troubles is driving up to camp and hike on a nearby mountain, their car falls over a cliff and ends up in the trees. The two of them are trapped within their car. As they lay there, the husband thinks back to their courtship and tries to figure out what's wrong.
Directly before they became engaged, he got her pregnant. They married without telling anyone. They hoped to cover up the illegitimate pregnancy with marriage. But when the baby miscarries, they become bitter toward God and each other. They go their separate ways even though they still live under the same roof. They have separate circles of friends and separate work schedules. But what they don't know is that one old couple is trying to get them back together again. The man is working on the young husband and the woman is working on the young wife. They slowly come back together again, until they find that they can have no more children. That was the source of the current fight. As they lie there in the car, waiting for help, they talk it out.
This is a good book mostly because Karen did something original at the end that not many authors would do. However, there are other unoriginal parts that overshadow the small originality.
The characters are imperfect, except for the old couple.
This book was almost as good as it could have been. It's definitely worth your time.
