The best thing about Randy Singer is that he refuses to allow himself to be pulled along in the undertow of predictable legal suspense. The Cross-Examination of Oliver Finney is one of his most original books to date.
It's about a judge, Oliver Finney, with a terminal case of lung cancer. He gets a call to come be the Christian representative for a reality show called Faith Under Trial. The contestants chosen are taken to a remote island and are told to defend whatever religion they follow. But Oliver Finney suspects something is awry and sends coded messages to Nikki Moreno using the The Cross Examination of Jesus Christ, which he supposedly wrote under a pen name.
The connection between the two books is creative, something no author has done before.
As usual, Randy Singer also uses realistic, imperfect characters in this plot. The book is very well-written and the ending interesting. Though not his best book ever, this one is still high on his list.
